Majestic Fiji is made up of over 300 islands. However, there are
2 large islands that make up the majority of the land mass: Viti
Levu and the smaller Vanua Levu.
Situated at a similar latitude to the Cook Islands and French Polynesia,
the climate here dictates the type of destination.
Fiji is different though from those destinations. It has a diversity,
especially in its people, which makes it unique. It is a combination
of Polynesian, Micronesian and Melanesian influences mixed with
Chinese, European and Indian cultures.
Amazingly, they have managed to intermingle their various backgrounds,
and what remains today is a diverse, peaceful and friendly nation.
The traditions of the native Fijians also remain evident. This
can be seen in their dancing, housing (known as bures) and the kava
ceremonies. Kava is made from the root of a tree. It is believed
to have medicinal properties, and known to have an intoxicating
effect.

Nadi (pronounced Nan-dee) is Fiji's third largest
city and home to the international airport.
It is the tourism hub, and from here you can arrange tours and
side trips. It is a good place to be based for any trips out to
the offshore islands.
As a large city, Nadi boasts a wide array of restaurants, activities
and services. The downtown area is also full of shopping opportunities,
where tourists can buy souvenirs, clothes, duty-free goods and traditional
Fijian art.
Suva is the capital of Fiji. This city has a different feel than
many others in the region. It is very modern, with large suburbs,
a central business district and a large port. It is the country's
political centre, and also boasts the University of the South Pacific.
 There
are many things to see here, including the museum. Most notably,
the architecture reflects the various backgrounds of its inhabitants,
from colonial-style buildings to mosques and modern schools.
Possibly the biggest landmark in Suva is the Roman Catholic Cathedral,
which was built over 100 years ago.
Visitors should not miss the market, where you can find seafood,
fruit and even the famous kava. The multicultural Fiji is evident
here, as vendors sell an eclectic range of products.
Just off the shore of Viti Levu are the Mamanucas. They are a collection
of small islands, and their close proximity makes it an easy side
trip. They can be visited in one day, but they are also home to
many accommodation options, ranging from backpacker hostels to luxury
resorts.
The activity list here includes snorkelling, diving, swimming and
surfing. Unlike many other parts of the South Pacific, the beaches
here do have quite a lot of tidal movement and good surf.
The Mamanucas are also a great place for bird watchers and nature
lovers. Both hikes and nature walks will allow you to take in the
sights and sounds of the local flora and fauna.
No matter what budget you're on, Fiji has a suitable place to
stay. From backpackers in an 80-bed dorm to first class resorts
with magnificent views, it's all there.
You can choose from romantic beachfront bungalows to family-friendly
2-bedroom villas. As with most of the South Pacific, water sports
are a huge part of the lifestyle, and as such many hotels and resorts
have a wide array of activities available.
Many resorts are also famous for their kids' club, making Fiji
a very family-oriented destination.
This is the uniquely Fijian experience and all visitors to Fiji
should visit Beachcomber Island.
This is owned and operated by the New Zealand company that is famous
for its jet boats. These trips provide access to mangroves and make
use of the year-round perfect weather.
 
For a bit of island hopping, take a South Sea Cruise. This is a
great way to look around, while still being able to base yourself
in Nadi (or the Coral Coast).
Other options include Denarau Island, the Nadi Markets, the Coral
Coast, Natadola Beach, and the Sigatoka Sand Dunes.
Car rental is widely available in Fiji. Some prefer to relax and
take transfers, which are often included in accommodation packages.

However, renting for one or two days allows some independent travel
to some of the sights, as well as looking around a few of the back
streets and meeting the people.
Scooters are also available, and provide a very memorable way to
tour around the islands.
